RUMC has for many years sponsored Scout Troop 367 and Cub Pack 367, and hosted many different Girl Scout troops currently Troop 740, Troop 190, and Troop 93.
With 1.7 million Cub Scouts, and 1.2 million Boy Scouts, and 1.1 million adult leaders registered, The Boy Scouts of America is the largest youth organization in the world. Its core values, “Duty to God, Duty to Country, and Duty to Self,” have endeared many to its cause. The mission of the Boy Scouts of America is to prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes, by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Law.
Darrell Ward leads our Cub Scout group, Pack 367. This group of 5th graders and below numbers over 80 boys, with over a dozen adult leaders. They meet weekly in small groups and once a month as a Pack in the Fellowship Hall.
Cal Alred is our new Scoutmaster for Troop 367. He and his 24 adult leaders work with over 50 young men in the group. The Eagle Scout rank is the culmination of at least four years of work in the program. We had five men achieve the goal of Eagle Scout last year.
Founder Juliette Gordon Low organized the first Girl Scout Troop on March 12, 1912, in Savannah, Georgia. Girl Scouting strives to build girls of courage, confidence, and character, who will make the world a better place. Today, there are 3.7 million Girl Scouts—2.7 million girl members, and 928,000 adult members working primarily as volunteers
Statistics indicate that of all the youth who join Scouting through the church, 25 percent are United Methodists, 25 percent are members of other denominations or faiths, and 50 percent come from unchurched families. Reaching out to families that do not have a church home is not a new concept. Scouting is one potential entry point for persons to join the church, which then offers the opportunity to introduce, nurture, and strengthen a relationship with Jesus Christ. Scouting provides a great way for the local church to serve its community and in the process offer new and exciting programs.
